Safe Research Websites for Students

As teachers, we know how important it is for students to learn in a safe and constructive environment. In many classrooms, the learning environment incorporates an aspect of online learning, making clear boundaries for internet use essential. Establishing guidelines for online learning ensures that students focus on educational and developmentally appropriate content. The list below includes safe search engines and websites that students of all ages can use for online learning and research.

Here are some features to look for when creating a safe online space for young learners:

1. Content Filtering: only age-appropriate material is displayed; explicit, adult, or inappropriate content is automatically filtered out.

2. Privacy Protection: The search engine should prioritize user privacy, especially for children, by not collecting personal information or tracking online activities.

3. Ad Restrictions: Ideally, there should be no ads, or if ads are present, they should be minimal, clearly marked, and age-appropriate.

4. User-Friendly Interface: The interface should be simple, intuitive, and easy for children to use without adult supervision.

Parents and educators can use Google SafeSearch to detect and filter out explicit content from Google search results. To turn this feature on, scroll down to the bottom of the Google search engine and click on “Settings” > “Search Settings” > “SafeSearch.”

Kiddle

Kiddle is a visually appealing search engine for kids powered by Google SafeSearch. Kiddle employs a team of editors to ensure the safety and appropriateness of its content. When a student conducts Kiddle search, the first few results are from safe sites and pages explicitly written for kids. Subsequent results are from sites that, while not written specifically for kids, are simple enough to understand and have been filtered for any inappropriate content.

The Kiddle interface was designed with kids in mind. Most search results are illustrated with big thumbnails, which makes it easier for kids to scan and differentiate results. Kiddle also uses a large Arial font to enhance readability for kids.
